Immigration and American-Mexicans Let me tell you, the immigration policy of this country is horrendous..totally out of whack. Everyone seems to think that building a fence is going to correct the problem of illegal immigration. Nothing could be further from the truth! Remember the saying, “Where there is a will, there is a way”? This government can spend billions of dollars erecting a fence from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico. They can build lookout towers from here to there and back. They can put all of the Border Patrol and National Guard troops they want along the border. They can train all of the dogs they want to sniff and hunt down illegals all they want. And, after doing all of the above…you know what the end result is going to be? Nada! Probably 80% if these illegals come from Guatemala…Not Mexico. In reality, Mexicans do not like those citizens from Guatemala any more than the people of this country. In order for any kind of a National Border Fence to work, you would have to fence off Canada also. What about our national shorelines and coastal inlets? Going to fence those off also? Going to inspect every single container ship that dock in this country? Hundreds dock every single day and only 2% are casually inspected. Conservatives are running around screaming about all of these illegal Mexicans (and that is the nicest word they use) that the sky is falling, just like chicken little. Liberals are right behind them, looking like a bunch of bobble head dolls and saying “yup, yup, yup”. However, most Americans are forgetting one very important aspect about this cultural group. After the war between Mexico and the United States (which was really more of a land grab than a war) a border was established. Inside of this new border, were hundreds of thousands of Mexican citizens, who suddenly became Americans. Some didn’t like it, some didn’t care and some thought it was great! Bottom line was, is that very few of these “new” American’s had anything to do with their fellow countrymen who now lived south of the new “border”. Their generational ancestry had roots in the west far longer than any one of European descent. So, in reality, what these individuals are, are “American-Mexicans” vs. those who have immigrated from Mexico, which would be your true “Mexican-Americans”. American-Mexicans never had to immigrate from anywhere. They were already here. How can you be considered a foriegner in your own country? People scream that Mexicans are taking over in the Southwest. Imagine that! It would be interesting to find out, just how many of those in this cultural group, that others are up in arms about, are American-Mexicans? Maybe once this government can figure this out, who is who and what, then try and put together an immigration policy instead of building fences and training dogs.
